“Pete Rock is one of my favorite producers of all time – top three. I’d worked with Pete Rock with The Tribute To Roy Ayers project. It was my band and Pete Rock, so we’d worked together before and had always talked about doing something together, so he was my first call. I met up with him in the city and we went to the studio together. He came up with the beat. The piano parts are actually from some live concerts. I saved a bunch of them and played them for him [Rock], and he loved this particular one. So he used that one, chopped it up and put the drum over it and it was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ It was crazy. So we called Derrick Hodge, my bassist, and he threw a bass line on there and sealed the deal.”
