“I shot this for HipHopCanada during my first interview with Big Sean. I photographed Sean during a period of deep personal crisis and speaking to him helped restore my hope. More specifically, he told me about where he was a few years prior to our meeting, and he described how he felt when he spent his last twenty dollars on studio time in his hometown of Detroit. He recounted how he reluctantly walked into a McDonald’s to buy a cheeseburger and when he put his right hand into his pocket to pay, he realized that he didn’t have a cent to his name. Luckily, the staff at McDonald’s let him have the cheeseburger for free. That added to the many small victories and acts of human kindness that helped to create the humble and confident Big Sean that hip hop fans know today.”
