“I like thinking about two seeming opposites and meditating on their commonalities. In the case of the Motorcycles, I was thinking about building and destroying. I spent a lot of time recreating the bikes I saw parked outside of the Hells Angels club in the East Village–every detail in my bikes was the same as the originals, even the engines worked. But it took me lining them up and kicking them over to turn them into a sculpture. The crucial element is chance, which exists in the space between when they were standing and when they had fallen, in this suspended state of both creation and destruction.”
