    Jay-Z
I know we coulda had it all
I wasn’t ready to go steady, no, not at all
Smoke in mirrors cloudin’ my vision, we hit a wall
Couldn’t see the moon and the sky behind the fall
    Pregnant pause
Damn, your baby tall, whatchu been up to?
I don’t blame you, my doll, yeah, we kinda stallin’
As God as my witness, time, it was my mistress
Guess it’s in the stars for me to love you from a distance
Uh, our ship sailed, uh, the wind blows
The door’s always open but our window is closed
You always thought “What if?” but that’ll just drive you crazy
Baby-girl interrupted, thinkin’ ’bout what wasn’t
Thinkin’ ’bout “What was it?” Was it somethin’ I done?
Somethin’ I could do better although nothin’ could be done?
Sometimes you get what you need, not what you think you want
So maybe no moon and sky, yet a beautiful son

  70. there’s an amazing book that you should read about street fashion from the 60s on called “the way we wore: a life in threads” by robert elms. in it he talks, briefly, about sade who was just coming up in the music industry when he knew her (thats what made me think of it)

  73. There are few songs that speak to your soul .. this is one of them.
I’ve been bumping Sade since i was in the womb.. been a Jay fan since
    the age of 6.

  74. Love it Jay..I was nervous to here who could make a Sade’ song better than they already are..and you did just that..Master Piece..

  75. got my vote 4 song of tha year already…

  76. Let’s go HOV..EPIC. Sade..Call me!

  77. @andy that “pregnate pause” just keeps echoing in my head, its like i hear his heartbeat and it stops during the ultrasound. And i keep thinking “what if” “what was it? was it something that ive done” thinking i could have done better, but there was nothing that could be done” The Doctor told me that. Yet i still have pain thinkinng of it…. but I have a “beautiful son” and im so grateful for him

Keep being that smooth and laid back rapper who’s voice I fell in love with, Mr. Carter! Sade, please continue to make beautiful, yet haunting, music. Together, you two are unstoppable.

This shit is a work of terror from my God Emcee Ess Dot. Praise u for tickling my ears with whta so many where im from jus dont seem to understand and thats real music. Im a strugglin white emcee that resides right outside nashville tn where white boys with gold teeth and braids seem to dominate the local scene with dope boy music in which im jus not a fan of the recycled brand of music. Though myself i have to hustle opiates to provide for my family being im a one time felon for possesion resale of scheldule II and it seems impossible to find a job that will support my fam after child support is deducted. So im left with music and pills. Chances are u will never read this but if you do look me up im not hard to find. Names Rockford Alan Cox aka Rocky GetItAzIs. I will nvr give up on my dream and at this point a shot in the dark is better than none taking at all huh.I owe it to Bero (best friend shot and killed over local rap beef seven yrs ago) Maybe the stars will line up jus right and u may read this and have the urge to locate me. I believe in dreams becoming reality. Oprah put me on that secret of life visualazation shit and that shits real. Get at me Azis. “til we all got triangles on our wall”

Love the song right up until the rapping starts. Certainly hope there’s a non rap version on the upcoming cd or itunes. Sade I love you to death but you’ve got to stick to what you do best and thats contemperary jazz/rhythm & blues. Bringing in Jay-Z appeals to a crowd that wasn’t there at the beginning and wouldn’t appreciate you without him. Glad to see your still working and as Jay Z would probably say keep it real please.

  117. Anonymous says:

It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I’ve heard that saying all my life and I can honestly say that I have come to believe it. This beautiful song reminds me of my love lost. Eventually the pain faded, and now when I look back I remember him and us and feeling loved for the very first time. Thanks Jay.

  118. Ziontrain says:

    “…could have had it all”
    “…not at all”
    “…hit the wall”
    “…behind the fall”

At first I thought the rhyming was a parody of Jay-Z, but then I realized wow: it was him – he musta had nothing left in the tank that day. Probably grabbed his nephew’s English book and ripped some of the rhyming school exercises from it.

Am speechless that Jay-Z would not only release this product, but actually plug it on his blog, complete with sample. Surely, one one who listens to this dross is going to think “You know I’m not all that keen on Sade, but damn Jay-Z dropped some epic lyrics on that track – I gotta cop that one – now!”

  119. Thomas V. says:

very intriguing lyrics…great production. Sade’s voice is mystifying

  120. Anonymous says:

Robert Frost stated “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” Beautifully done

  121. Matthew Star says:

This is a great song and Jay-Z helped to take it to a whole other level. For those of you who hate Jay-Z my question is why are you on his blog? LOL. You people are the dumb consumers because you would probably buy a CD just to complain about how much you “hated” it. Makes no sense. Sade and Jay-Z coming together is like two worlds colliding but in a positive way. I enjoyed this work of art. Unlike the majority of the generic rap stars Jay-Z actually knows how to put poetry in his music. He knows how to express himself. Thanks Jay-Z.

P.S. Hey Jay man keep doing your poetry and continue to inspire the youth and lead them in a positive direction.

  122. @Ziontrain: It’s not always about the complexity of the rhyming words. Of course you want syllables, but when you make as much music as Jay does … you don’t make every record the same, lyrically. There is a theme and an audience to target, and because of that certain styles are appropriate and others are not.

With a slow, relaxed song such as this one, long-syllable-rhymes aren’t really ideal for the aesthetic aspects of the song. Rather, it is better to ride the beat and create a mood and tempo.

Big words are not inherently best. In addition to the fact shorter words let the beat build, depending on how they are employed, they have more substance. For instance, in this song, even though Jay’s words may not be exactly complex, they do have metaphorical value and meaning behind them. Emotion. That’s what this song takes advantage of. Emotions. Setting a tempo to establish a mood and create an emotional rise — that’s how it captivates its listeners. It would be inappropriate and nonsensical for Jay-Z to spit a verse like, say, AZ’s on Life’s a Bitch…a contradiction.

You’re not supposed to body every track you’re on. You’re supposed to make diversified music that broadens your audience and fanbase and shows your different talents and different sides; music that people listen to, relate to, feel, enjoy, like, bang, dance to, everything. It’s called versatility. To body everything you’re on and go all out lyrically is simply not wise as a businessman.

That said, I LOVE THE SONG JAY KEEP DOING YOUR THING.

  123. @ Andrew…..so true! When an artist can set the tone for the song and control that flow, that is a complexity that most dont understand. When Jay speaks it could apply to anything or one specific thing. It is up to his listeners to interpret. This song was palying on repeat for me … thinking deeply. I don’t see any other artist bringing people to tears while inspiring at the same time. Until you do, any “Jay-Haters” need to exit stage right… this aint the place for that!!!!!!!!

  127. This is thee hottest remix ive ever heard from SADE, SADE COULD GET IT! I LOVE A FRECKLE FACE WOMAN.

  128. Been Benson says:

first time here Sade is ill and Jay-Z is the top of the food chain 2 gether this is a dope song..

  129. Anonymous says:

In respose to Matthew Star: The reason your seeing so many Jay-Z haters as you call them. Is because Sade’s record label RCA puts out a e-mail to all her fans on the latest about her and in the latest one there was a link to this blog so that we could hear her latest “The Moon and The Sky” . Personally I like rap. In a rap song that is. I can even deal with it integrated into a pop song but there has got to be a line that you don’t cross and thats into other genre’s like R&B and Jazz. There’s only one artist that I believe pulled it off and that was the late great Guru with his album series called jazzmatazz. This collaboration with Sade and Jay-Z makes as much sense as the one with Elton John and Eminem did.

  130. Anonymous says:

As Ice Cube said to Dre in one song ” Yo Jay stick to producing ! “

  131. jay killed this track!!! i love it, he just reminded me why hes my favorite artist with this one

  132. Peter Karby says:

@ eastenderz – You seem to have a very limited view of things. No diss, just straight up talk. I see no reason why hip hop / rap should be limited to ANYTHING!? It should expand and expand – and keep going. Just like Jay-Z have done. Hes over 40 and STILL relevant and exciting to listen to. I like him more today than the hard knock life times.

The idea that “real rap” is made in a basement, and needs to stay in the basement to be “real,” is really outdated. Its 2011 – let’s move on, try new things. Let’s evolve and not stagnate.

  133. Anonymous says:

I’m loving this track…Sade is and will ALWAYS remain my favorite soulful singer… From the Great B.I.G to the most incredible JAY-Z…B.I.G would be proud…Jay have truly ascended…Jay have climbed that mountain and touched the stars…Jay have broken down the traditional walls of hip hop…True enough to say…After him there shall be no more…@Eastenderz…My dude…Stick to techno…Until you know the music behind the man, you shouldn’t speak…People hate…Haters always do…Think about it…Whenever you do something right or get successful at anything you do, the next thing that happens is…You get HATED ON…And just like you, my dude Jay hears it and brush his shoulders off and while he is doing that…He is laughing all the way to the bank…From a drug dealer, to a businessman/entrepreneur, to a LEGAL multi-millionaire…What more can I say?…Oh yes…Hate on that Playa.

  134. Anonymous says:

I see “Hatesquasher” got jokes. I listen to all types of music and like and hate music of all genre’s. I love the beat and the soulful singing that Sade brings to this cut but then it gets twisted going from R&B to Jay-Z’s oratory of hung words and uh uh. This cat don’t jive with Sade’s flow. I believe Jay-Z is great in hip hop along with biggie smalls but this does not mesh well together like the way Aerosmith was with Run DMC on “Walk This Way”. I don’t hate I just speak what I feel is true to me. When Ol’ blue eyes started doing those duets with everybody under the sun I didn’t exactly run out to the music store to get it even though I loved him to death. He was singing with others well outside his genre. It is what it is and I’ve just got to accept it. I’m still hoping of a non Jay-Z version of this remix though

  135. Fedor says:

    More than great..SADE timeless!

  139. BEAUTIFUL MUSIC ALWAYS KEEP IT UP JIGGA

  140. @east so you just hate in general right? Thats what you are saying…. right? well the rest of us love it and dont feel hip hop should be contained by anything …… especially hate! I dont hate any music i appriciate the effort on all parts. However i save my dislike for things that are stupid and spiteful stuff not two multi-platinum artist making a song.

Today was the day my child was supposed to be born, so im listening to this on repeat in tears….pregante pause….thinking about what if and its driving me crazy but this song is going to get me through it. Andy thank you for being the true soul that really feels the pain of your people. Songs like “most kings” song cry, meet the parents, regrets have always presented themselves in my darkest hours. This song came as I was looking at my belly asking why, and you gave me the answer……

” sometimes you get what you need/not always what you want/so maybe no moon and sky/but a beuatiful son”

who was born two years earlier thru c-section after a life threating preganancy, i may not have made it if I had tried to have this one.

  155. When I lost my baby I was up for nights just crying, I found this song and it healed me a little I kept it on repeat to stop my tears for months. A year later I became pregnant and was overjoyed and came back to this song just to tell jay thanks for being gifted and helping me thru it. Now as I type this I lay in the hospital once again in tears, scared and my son is holding on. Jay, my life has echoed yours so closely now I can only pray my son will be as healthy as blue ivy and I may listen to glory with tears of joy.
