Life+Times: In a past interview, you (Rebecca) stated that the goal of the third album, Beta Love, was to push its sound. In what way do you think that was accomplished?
Rebecca Zeller: When we were approaching this record, we sort of questioned everything, but specifically the role of the strings – how involved they would be. Obviously with The Rhumb Line and The Orchard, they’re more melodic, more up front, a little in-your-face. I think we found that a bit limiting.
Wes Miles: We all wanted to change our roles a little bit. There’s less of us, there’s more space to experiment.
RZ: More let the songs guide us.
WM: The main question was, ‘Where does the song lead us?’ versus ‘What are the strings going to do?’
