“V.S.O.P” – K. Michelle

“That’s another good one. I grew up with an extensive record collection. My mother and father had everything. The Chi-Lites’ “That’s How Long” record was always something that I loved. I always loved it. When The Black Album came out and Just Blaze – who is in my top five dead or alive producers – flipped it for JAY Z’s “December 4th” I was just like “This dude Just is the best!” I always felt somebody could sing to it though. We had the session for Priscilla Renea to come in. She’s an amazing singer-songwriter. She’s incredible. I chopped up that Chi-Lites sample. I was playing it different and started singing these melodies. Within minutes Priscilla had come up with something. That song was probably finished in about 45 minutes. It sat around for about two years. By the time K. Michelle heard it I wasn’t thinking anything of it, because it was such an old song. I actually had forgotten about the song. Oak went to Atlanta and cut it on her. He brought the record back and she sounded amazing. I knew it could be something. I feel like that was the R&B record of summer 2013. I wasn’t expecting that.”
