A Statement From Shawn “JAY Z” Carter

11.15.2013

JAY'S I

In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.

While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.

As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th.  - Shawn “JAY Z” Carter

Good move to leverage your power for change and progress #changetakestime !

Dear Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Fuck Outta Here with this bullshit, who do you think you fooling? You only care about your image and money. You only joining this “bullshit council” so corporations know you didn’t succumb to public pressure and act like you doing something for black people. FOH! Why do you need Barneys for your scholarship foundation when you almost worth a billions dollars? What “findings” are you still waiting for? You could have used your voice when it mattered. When the story was fresh in people’s minds as your know how the news cycle goes, people forget the significance of the incident. About how black people are still view and treated, but you still choose to do business with them. The corporate world really has you by the nuts, huh? Like your brother Kanye West said, “Stop all that coon shit!”

  • Angela

Good for you. You have the power to change things, and I’m happy 100% of the proceeds are going to the foundation. Make moves!

  • Tenny Whyte

So because people CHOOSE to forget or rather ignore these social issues some how this is Jays fault. One doesn’t simply effect change from the outside, you sound like an ignorant hater with no concept of the FACT that money = power = a voice = influence. More power to my young black brother.

  • S’ Dibie

Dude you need a reality check, period!!! If you think it’s easy being Jay Z, think again. You and your ignorant shitty talk are for no good and does not lead anywhere. We all can talk bad about somebody until we step into their shoes to see what it really feels like. You think if you were given the same Power as Jay Z has to make good judgement on the matter, yours would have been the best? Here’s a man who has now chosen to be involved a whole lot on the matter of the racial profiling and also decided that not only 25% of the sales collaboration but 100% of it go to his foundation for charity, and you’re still criticizing him; for what?? I don’t know about you Space Mack, but he -> Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has now made a good decision about the issue, and we should respect that. Know yourself!

Dumbest comment I’ve read in a while.

  • http://www.fashionluvr.com FashionLuvr

Great that Barneys stepped up and now doing 100% of sales. Shows how much they are willing to financially support the foundation.

  • smarterthanafifthgrader

The BRILLIANCE of this deal is that every time a black person walks into a Barney’s store to buy something from the SCC line, 100% of that money goes to charity. It’s like saying, “You better let my people in AND you betta not make a dime off of their money!” It is making them pay for what they did. THAT is a BOSS move!

  • Christopher Jared Demers

You think if some white girl had wrongly accused you of rape that Barney’s would be “moving forward” with Jay-Z?? They wouldn’t have waited for any facts. You would have been dropped in a hot NY minute. You would have been innocent and assed out, these bastards are guilty and suffer no consequences. Concessions are not consequences. In actuality, what they’ve agreed to “donate” additionally to your foundation amounts to nothing more than a charitable business write off for them. Balanced against the increased profits they will make from all the additional attention and traffic their association with you brings, they still come out way ahead financially. So your helping to financially support an institution that employs a policy of systematic racist victimization against the very same population your foundation attempts to help rise above such indignities through education and self empowerment? How does that work? Bravo Jay! Maybe your next album should be titled “Shades of Conflict and Confusion”

  • Stacia Daniel

Disappointed. But do see the opportunity.
I think you are in a unique position to create change, however,
I think it would have worked better if you were to NOT go forward collaboration until AFTER this leadership council was implemented and they’ve proven they are changing by IMPLEMENTING recommended policies.

  • Tobie Buford

Getting involve in the process is a good way to go. Perhaps you can help evoke change in the way Barney’s views African American consumers. The other side of this is, has Barney’s ever had a history of discriminating against African American customers? If so, then they may not be the only game in town to support your Foundation… but getting involve always work. I am always proud of your ability to find a way to change a negative into a positive. Good Works are never forgotten!

  • Synthia Rose

    Damn. That was good.

  • M☼RS ♕skank Dollar♕

man fuck them great album… so what they mad because police profiled a gay kid with money.. who da fuq cares!! i’m sorry.

  • Anonymous

Fam… First you need to relax and take a chill pill. Reacting right away would have been a knee jerk reaction and one without facts, what good is that?!..That would have been the same thing Barneys done and we will be falling into the same cycle. Another thought is that Jay can not simple pull out on this collaboration, Barneys and the other fashion houses would have sued him because I’m sure he is locked into some sort of contract written 6 months ago or even earlier. Jay placing himself on the council is giving us a voice and platform to make changes. Thats where all the changes take place my G, to fight the power you have to have some power as well. Thats the way the game is played and always have been.

  • krow132

But that’s their problem. They think things actually change by just getting angry, or protesting and saying how angry you are. No one cares about that. That doesn’t affect their bottom line. They honestly think that Jay backing out completely would hurt profits in the long run. Barneys would still be making a bunch of money, hell some black folks would still be going to barneys. The only way you affect change is through the system. These people have the Occupy Wall Street syndrome where all they want to do is protest while they (The Tea Party) are organizing and integrating into the system and forcing the change from within. lol but they dont understand that. This is the best way Jay could have proceeded. He can eventually have enough leverage to make significant changes to the policy or even influence and help appoint the corporate execs of the company and before you know it we’re running the company.

*applause* despite not ‘answering to bustas’ your action speaks volumes – hope everyone that has something negative to say is ACTIVELY working to make his/her community better? ;-*

  • Angela

Rape vs. being accused of stealing something are two very, very different things.

  • AlwaysBlossom

Clearly you’ve missed the central point: racial profiling/false accusation while Black. It is no different. Someone Black has been labelled a criminal, falsely.

  • AlwaysBlossom

Jay-Z’s perceived power is an illusion.

  • AlwaysBlossom

lol, so you worked something out that salvages your reputation and Barneys (not with many of us though)…As soon as this deal is over; they’ll go back to their ways. :) This collaboration was all imagery. Nice fat write off for Barneys.

  • AudyCatBedstuy

I am sorry but Mr. Carter has the entire black community hood winked. We already know that every dime that goes into his so called “foundation” goes towards paying the salaries of his friends and family, who are on the payroll. There is not much money flowing to the charities anyway – so who cares about his foundation. How about he stop making the rags overseas and actually build a factory in Brooklyn near the Tompkins Projects and provide good paying jobs to some of the people who parents lives he ruined with his drug sales. Then maybe some of those people will be able to afford to buy his crap!!!

Genius, again.;) Philanthropic endeavors especially in support of EDUCATION and SCHOLARSHIP for the under-served groups will always win and is very much needed.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Do you. Continue to let them voice their opinions. Thanks for the show.

    the man!

UM, ME THINKING OUT LOUD…SO THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT WAS ACTUALLY JOHN HANSEN. AFTER HIM WAS 7 MORE PRESIDENTS. THIS SYSTEM COULDN’T WORK, SO THEY CREATED THE CONSTITUTION IN 1776. MR. WASHINGTON AND ALL HIS “SEEING” FRIENDS BEGAN A NEW SYSTEM. SO, OBAMA IS THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT IN THE NEW SYSTEM, LOL BLACK, HE IS ALSO WHITE, ANYWAY….NOW THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS CRASHING AND IN TURN SO IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. ALL BECAUSE OF THE REPUBLICANS PUTTING CRAP OUT THERE AND WE ARE FALLING FOR IT. SO, IF THE SYSTEM WAS CHANGED AFTER MR. HANSEN, WHY WOULDN’T IT CHANGE AFTER OBAMA? IS THIS THE FORESIGHT OF MAGNA CARTER, THE RE-WRITTEN RULES? IDK, I MAY GET IN TROUBLE FOR THIS…

  • nicebrowng from crooklyn

Mr. Carter, you’ve come along way. Have seen what my eyes may never see. You are blessed with so much opportunities. Martin Luther King Jr. Marchedfor our civil rights as did many others. We are from the hood. But we can’t change the hood. We know that because of the ignorance of our people. No one can change racial profiling. Once the people of the hood change then everything will change. YOU can’t save the Hood, but hopefully you can assist those who are willing to change for the better and improve their lifestyles and structural thinking. Too much hood mentality and the oppressors know people in the hood are too ignorant to change. Sadly but true, one bad apple can spoil the bunch. Every day I see people from the hood display ratchet behavior and expect to get respect. It was wrong for those young people to be profiled. And they deserve justice. But people of color will always be profiled unless their behavior in the streets improve. The things I’ve seen my people do on a daily basis makes me wonder if they know what love is and individually we represent each other. The fact is it’s a dog eat dog world. And the truth of the matter is, if you don’t bite first, you will get bitten. Best of luck on your holiday line and I hope it goes well so you can continue to help those who are willing to help themselves in a positive way. So they can possibly change the for the better and hopefully others will follow.

  • vic

    very well put.

  • vic

And you really believe that statement?.That a 100% of that money will go to charity.
Barney’s is in the business of making money, and so if there wasn’t anything in the deal
for them they wouldn’t be in it.
Just hope that jay-z realized that those people are perfidious.

    My thumbs up for you.

You smart homie ya boy Darius from Newark n.j

  • Stella

    I agree

  • janessa

So HOV, what’s the best way to catch the attention of a business man such as yourself, through music. I plan on not hearing a response, and going to continue grinding hard, since you “find good music”. Though I know so many people are dreaming and “striving” for the same. I am different. My music will not be the commerical bs, but I’ll try for repetition and MD’s preference. BE looking out. I’ll see you. Watch
