What Makes A Classic Hip-Hop Album?

On this episode of The Truth, we ask the question, are Kendrick Lamar‘s Good Kid, m.A.A.d City and Nas’ Life Is Good classic albums on par with hip-hop’s lasting works, or are they just great albums that won’t stand the test of time?

Wait, we’re gonna talk about classics and not bring up Jay-Z? On Jay-Z’s website? What.

I like everything that you’re saying and agree with those points that Make a classic album. I do believe that Kendricks offering IS a classic. All that it is missing is the Cultural impact–but I also believe that Reasonable Doubt was a Classic and IT was missing that same cultural impact. Don’t allow these CURRENT Hip hop fans to take you away from what you’re hearing–if it moves you, it moves you. Those albums that you named as classics are NOT the only classics–as you see I named Reasonable doubt. There are different types of classics–The ones that you named were the blockbusters–the Scarface. The movies that blew up and were blockbusters. But you mean to tell me that Shawshank Redemption wasn’t a classic? We can call Training Day a classic–it was a blockbuster. But No Country for Old Men is ALSO a classic.

Finally listened to GKMC…it’s a really good album; the best I’ve heard from the left coast in a good minute…but it’s not a classic.

DANG ELLIOT! You always come with some thought provoking stuff lol, just when I think to myself “Ok, this is what makes a classic hip hop album” So a classic hip hop album moves a culture? Hmmm I was thinking “The album should tell a story of a culture” Again that’s my opinion, I say it’s the lyrics, delivery and passion.

GKMC…is classic….time will reveal as much. The cultural impact you speak of is still growing with Kendrick.
