We stumbled across this tiny art fair in the Hamptons where we ran into Anthony Spinello who represented this artist, Santiago. At the time, Santiago was a young, starving artist who only used BIC pens and pencils to draw these faces on liner pages of books. He didn’t have enough money to buy regular paper. Beyond Santiago’s story, there is a certain charm to these drawings. Each portrait has these huge, huge eyes but they’re so sad. The portraits have a duality of emotions but are also uplifting at the same time. They give a melancholy feel to the viewer.
