“Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” – Big Sean featuring Kanye West and Roscoe Dash

“My favorite part about that song is that it was done in my mom’s basement. I did the “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” beat the same time I did the beat for Elle Varner‘s “Refill.” I was vibin’ with my brother DJ Camper. He’s amazing. He produced Tamar Braxton’s “Love & War” and so many other joints. He and I met in like 2008. I found the [mimics squeaking sound], put that down, then started putting the drums down, then the horns came and then I made a second section for chords. DJ just picked up on it. I always tell people that I make maybe a beat a week, because I spend so much time on a beat, but “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” is one of those beats that took about a half and hour, because the vibe was so strong. DJ and I were just vibin’. My writer Andrea Simms was there in the basement also gassing us up. That beat sat for almost two years. I still don’t know how Roscoe Dash got a hold of it. The next thing I know I’m getting a call saying I had to take some files to New York for Kanye. I remember saying that I had never made a beat for Kanye. They played me the “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” beat over the phone and I was like “Oh shit. That is my beat.” That was the start of me and Kanye’s working relationship.”
